Gr.atropos = inflexible and L. atropa = deadly nightshade
Atropine acts as a potent cholinergic antagonist (parasympatholytic), therefore leading to a dilatation of the pupils. In the Renaissance this effect was used for cosmetic purposes, leading to the term “Belladonna”.
